Going Far

by: Hank Hooper, Associate Athletic Director
“If you want to go fast, go alone.  If you want to go far, go together.”
                                                                                                An African Proverb

The proverb above are words to coach by if you are Savannah Zimmerman.  She understands all too well that true strength is achieved through a steady and shared path – no shortcuts, no solitary thought – just TEAM moving in one direction with a common goal.  That is her program-map for building a rock-solid foundation for the girls’ lacrosse program.  A foundation able to withstand the throes of any eroding element, and she begins setting that foundation now.
To the delight of those who evaluated and vetted her, Savannah Zimmerman accepted the head coaching position for Mullen’s girls’ lacrosse program.  In true fashion of her thoroughness, she expressed her excitement and humble appreciation for the offer, yet paused to adequately discern whether the opportunity was suitable for her family and job and fair to Mullen and the girls.  There had to be no doubt on all accounts.  Only after there was complete assurance in her mind did she enthusiastically commit to our Mullen family.  That is what smart people do, and let me tell you, Savannah Zimmerman is as smart as they come.

A native Coloradan, Savannah grew up in Littleton with her three sisters which to this day remain her very best friends. It was in those early, formative years where she began her lacrosse career at the ripe-old age of 8-years old when her dad signed her up for a rec-league.  She went on to play six-years for Team 180 while also joining her high school team.  It was in high school where the star began to shine.  She was a four-year starter and two-year team captain, and she played so well that colleges began to take notice.  Savannah settled on Scripps College in Claremont, California where she played for the Athenas lacrosse team.  She went on to earn her degree in Economics and Studio Art from the 35th-ranked Liberal Arts Colleges in America.  With her degree in hand, Savannah has worked as an Accountant, a Financial Recruiter, an Education & Training Coordinator, and currently spends her professional time as a Corporate Recruiter.  Also, during that time, she earned her Grant Writer Certification from Fort Hays University as well as her Wine 101 and Wine 201 Certification.

Seldom is Savannah found motionless except for those times she is wrapped in a good novel; otherwise, she is out with her husband, Austin, and her dog, Benji, enjoying the freedoms of the countryside, or satisfying her artistic nature working at the wheel, getting a good run in, or exploring the depths in her scuba gear.  Energy abounds, and it is most evident in her personality.  In her most tranquil moments, she exudes excitement which is nothing more than her anticipation of establishing or strengthening another relationship because that is the fuel on which she runs or as Savannah puts it, “the core of what I do is build relationships.”  It is from that “core” where liftoff will occur.  The eagerness is palpable.  “It is such a gift to be able to be the new head of the lacrosse program at Mullen because I have come to learn that it is a place that deeply aligns with my own values and ideals of what it means to be successful…  I can’t wait to organize and collaborate with my team, my coaching staff, and the Mullen community to bring unprecedented success to our lacrosse program.”  This is for certain; no one will work harder, strive to be the best, and cherish our girls more deeply than Savannah Zimmerman.  We can also count on a whole slew of new Mustangs jumping into the fold as Austin and Benji carry her flag, and her No. 1 fan, her dad, and three best friends throw their weight of support into a new era of girls’ lacrosse at Mullen High School.  Together, we will all go far.
